About the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t spent an offseason as World Series champions since 1980-81. After the celebration died down, the Phillies had the daunting task of dealing with 10 players facing arbitration, most notably first baseman Ryan Howard.

The architect of the team general manager Pat Gillick retired, although he remains with the club as a consultant. Taking his place is Ruben Amaro Jr., a former Philly outfielder.

One of Amaro’s first moves as general manager was extending the contract of manager Charlie Manuel through 2011. Then Amaro acquired former Seattle Mariner outfielder Raul Ibanez. He will replace fan favorite Pat Burrell—the team didn’t offer him arbitration.

Burrell was the only player out of the 10 facing arbitration that Amaro failed to retain. The last, Howard, avoided arbitration by signing a three-year contract worth $54 million.

The Phillies kept their starting rotation intact by resigning World Series MVP Cole Hamels, right hander Joe Blanton, and 46-year-old Jamie Moyer—a 16 game winning in 2008. The offseason also saw new deals for outfielders Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth.

Despite retaining nearly all the key players from their championship run, the team does have a few personnel problems. Second basemen Chase Utley had offseason hip surgery and is questionable for opening day. J.C. Romero, a solid left-handed reliever, is suspended for the first 50 games of the season for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy.

However, Amaro has addressed both player’s absences by signing veteran reliever Chan Ho Park and veteran second basemen Marcus Giles.

Other challenges facing the Phillies in 2009 will be selecting a fifth starter. Right now it appears competition is wide open between left handed J.A. Happ and right-handers Park, Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco. Another challenge for the team will be juggling a lineup heavy with left handed bats.

The 2009 Phillies appear as strong as the 2008 championship team. However, maintaining their high level of play has come with a price. The team’s Opening Day payroll is estimated at $131.5 million, up from 2008’s Opening Day payroll of $104 million.

The Phillies start their title defense April 5 at Citizens Bank Park against the Atlanta Braves.
